Perinatal Depression: Recognition & Management in Primary Care

Perinatal depression affects approximately one in five Australian women, yet it remains under-recognised in primary care settings. Early identification and appropriate management can significantly improve outcomes for both mother and child.

This presentation will examine current screening approaches, diagnostic considerations that distinguish perinatal depression from normal adjustment, and evidence-based treatment pathways available to general practitioners. Particular attention will be given to the practical challenges of prescribing in the perinatal period and to indications for specialist referral.
